The ABC published a report http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/04/18/2220693.htm?section=justin

The report says that there are 25% more men in rural areas because the women leave to study and the men stay to work.

I’d love to know why women feel free to leave while men feel they have to stay in the country.  Women seen driven to better themselves while men don’t.  Anyone have any insight into this behaviour.

  • Where is the work?

I think it is more because the work that is available in rural areas is predominantly around farming, wine making etc and there are more roles suitable for males.

So the woman leave because they want more choices. As a result they have to educate themselves more, in some cases, to go for the different roles they didn’t have the opportunity to in the country.

Generally speaking most work in the rural communities is physically demanding and for a women you either want to do that type of work or not and if you don’t then there are not many other options.
