Spotted an interesting article on the future of local newspapers today. http://recoveringjournalist.typepad.com/recovering_journalist/2008/08/what-will-happen-when-the-presses-go-silent.html

I was a speaker at the regional Walkleys on this very topic about two weeks ago and I think we’re seeing this happen in Australia.  Having spent a lot of time touring the country it looks to me like the major news organisations think world news is local news, regional news is local news and local news has largely disappeared.  The traditional route for young journalists was to chase stories  in rural Australia until they learned the ropes and then head to the city.  This is no longer available, seems to me the only show in town for really local is websites like OurPatch and the ABC.

I just got a new iPhone and a whole world has opened up to me. As more people have these mobile internet phones the more we will see OurPatch take on a useful role in our local communities. Now, if I have a nice experience at a local business I am able to pull up that business’s listing and post a review! And when I want to find out what specials are on for afternoon tea I can pull up a cafe’s voucher and go straight there!

With iPhone and other 3G phones we are really going to enter a whole new world for internet usage.
