Death is the universal experience of all humanity, but each individual death is unique to the surviving relatives and friends.

We all seek to resolve our grief in our own way, however the burden, although personal, should not be borne alone.

Advice, all required notifications, practical preparations and special arrangements may be entrusted to us to ensure that all details are peacefully and professionally managed during the stressful time after a death has occurred.

    Arranging a funeral

    Wills & Estates

The Executor named in the last known Will must be notified as soon as possible. (Where a family member or friend has been named Executor, it is likely that they will need professional advice or assistance to ensure they fully understand their rights and responsibilities as an Executor.)

Where a Will cannot be located, the responsibility to administer the estate usually rests with the next-of-kin, who should seek professional advice before attempting to finalise matters.

Southern Highland Funerals can put you in touch with professionals to guide you through these issues.

    Catering for Different Cultures

Southern Highland Funerals take into consideration the various personal requests of the family which may include incorporating the rituals of the relevant cultures or religion. Each culture and religion have specific rituals, which must be obeyed. Rest assured these requests can be followed in every detail. When you talk to one of our staff, they will be more than happy to accommodate these wishes.

Similarly people may opt for either a traditional or more modern funeral, or perhaps compromise between the two. The selection of music, mementos of the departed on display, release of doves, placing favourite items on the coffin, the delivery of the eulogy and the involvement of family and friends. People are increasingly viewing funerals as a celebration of a life and our staff will work with you to ensure the funeral reflects the life and personality of the departed.

What to say to a grieving person

Saying “I’m sorry” is simple but will mean so much to someone who is grieving. They often just need someone to talk to, someone who’ll let them share their feelings and their memories. Talk about the person who’s died - mention their name and encourage the person who is grieving to speak openly. This helps the reality of the loss to sink in which is an important part of grieving.

Emotions should nor be bottled up. Grief is a necessary process for all of us, men and women, boys and girls, young and old.

Offer practical assistance to those in grief – help with the shopping, child minding, lawn mowing, meal preparation, transport requirements, whatever might lighten their load and allow them time to pass through the grieving process.
