    Business writing that works

If writing documents is not ‘your thing’, then read on.

I can help your business by facilitating and writing strategic documents for you: focusing on relevant content, structure, spelling, format and general presentation.

All inquiries and assessments of existing documents are obligation-free.

These documents include letters; policies and procedures; job descriptions; Fair Work Act workplace agreements; health and safety documents; tenders; expressions of interest;  government grant applications; reports and business plans.

As well as writing and preparing business documents I can discuss their content and purpose with you. If their purpose is to influence and achieve positive results, writing them professionally can give you a competitive edge because they are easier to read, state your position clearly and demonstrate that you care.

I can help in these areas through my experience in twenty-four years legal practice interviewing clients and preparing legal documents. I have also acquired a Diploma Professional Writing from the Australian College of Journalism.

    An Investment Opportunity

The business of writing resumes is a buoyant one, suffering from very few peaks and troughs, as more and more people understand that resumes are an essential and sophisticated marketing tool, and realise they need help from us if they are to win in the highly competitive employment market.

It is also as recession proof as is it possible to be for a business. Because in a tight economic market such as this year is shaping up to be, there are more retrenchments as employers look to cut costs as their business drops off. Consequently there are more people out of a job and looking for work.

Then we move into top gear as the phones ring hot and the emails roll in from potential clients. Making money as a business owner within the Successful Resumes Australia group is not hard once you have been trained by us.

In good times more people move around from job to job as they carve out career paths for themselves.

    School and Uni Graduate Résumés

Graduate Outlook, an annual survey of recruitment trends in Australia and New Zealand, consistently found the top three key selection criteria for recruiting graduates were:

    • communication skills

    • critical reasoning and analytical skills/problem-solving/local thinking/technical skills

    • passion/knowledge and industry/drive/commitment/attitude.

    Academic qualifications ranked fifth!

To show recruiters that you have these skills, your  résumés can  give examples of positions and/or situations where you have demonstrated your communication skills.  For example, participation in or contribution to clubs or causes, community organisations, holiday work, social or sporting clubs. These examples can also demonstrate other qualities/attributes that typically appear in position descriptions: such as work ethic, organisation, management, ability to work under pressure, attention to detail and team skills.

    Résumé relevance is everything!

Recruiters most appreciate in résumés: relevant experience and relevant qualifications presented in an easy to read professional format. To do that you must carefully read the job description and address each component in your resume. If you want to prepare a résumé with no particular position in mind, find a ‘job description’ in the ‘positions vacant’ that closely matches the sort of position that you want and then prepare your résumé accordingly. For this reason a so-called ‘generic’ résumé will most likely be a waste of time.

    Referee Quotes

In today’s litigious society, potential referees are generally reluctant to ‘get on letterhead’ to say good things about departing employees. However a novel way of achieving a similar result is to later ask them for a supporting quote about some key component of a job position and include it in the resume. You can approach the referee to supply the words in an email and confirm their permission to ‘quote’ them. In my experience they are usually happy to do so. This is highly credible primary evidence to support the applicant’s clear professional asset.

    Why cover letters?

A cover letter is helpful if it focuses on the recruiter and credibly:

    1. Summarises your suitability for the job and how you ‘fit’ the job description.

    2. Explains what you want to do next and why.

    3. Explains why you are leaving your present position.

    4. Explains why this job and this company.

    Resume Realities

    1. More than 2-3 pages: Won’t be read.

    2. Information irrelevant to the position: Wastes the reader’s valuable time.

    3. Irrelevant qualifications/training/licences: RSA/ Scuba Diving certificate for an office job?

    4. Unexplained gaps in employment/career history: Were you ‘doing time’ for embezzlement?

    5. Personal interests: Who cares? unless it’s gardening and applying to a Nursery.

    6. Describing past job ‘responsibilities’ alone: But what did you actually do or achieve? demonstrating that you can do this job.

    7. Providing referee details: You can be checked out and ruled out before been met.
