    We have just spent three nights at Fairmont for Christmas. What a waste of our time and money, not to mention extremely disappointing. York Fairmont Resort (if you can still call it a resort, Motel would be a more apt description) is nothing like it was the last time we visited six years ago. A change of hands has meant massive staffing cuts (according to the few remaining staff) and a huge drop in quality and standards. Our room had NO airconditioning. We complained for two days and were told repeatedly that it would be “fixed right away”. As it is the middle of summer and very warm, after our second hot sleepless night we insisted we either have a room change, or we were cutting our stay short and leaving. We were transferred to another room, and found out via staff that many other rooms at Fairmont have faulty airconditioning and that the new owners are letting the hotel fall apart and not maintaining the hotel. Our bathroom was filthy – mould in the shower and around the basin. The room itself was covered in dust. There were no porters to assist with manouvering the heavy luggage trolley all the way to the room – apparently the new owners have cut back from 8 porter staff to just one (and it was his day off). We were told that a ninety year old man had nearly fallen over trying to push his luggage trolley himself the previous day, and NO-ONE FROM FAIRMONT HELPED HIM. The safe was broken in the new room we were transferred to. It also had no kettle, no plug and the tv didn’t work. The room was dusty, and the bath contained several short black hairs left by its previous occupant – yuck. By this stage, and with only one night to go, we figured it wasn’t worth complaining any more and we just couldn’t wait to get home. The Christmas lunch at Fairmont was a massive disappointment in that they didn’t have ENOUGH food for the number of people there. We had a 1pm seating – but others had started their lunches at 12 midday. By the time we had finished our main course and were ready for dessert, 80% of the desserts were finished. When we asked for more to be brought out we were told, quite bluntly, THERE’S NONE LEFT. Which put a real damper on Christmas day, especially for my children. We won’t be returning to York Fairmont Resort until it changes hands again. It was a much nicer place before taken over by York. We were told by a friendly staff member who has worked there for some years that they are told by 4-5 patrons a week that they will not be coming back to Fairmont again. Our sentiments exactly. There was not even any airconditioning in the front foyer, and waiting for check out we sweltered in the heat. The reception staff had small fans behind their desk – no wonder. Save your money and stay elsewhere. Fairmont is a three star has-been nowadays.
