A devastating fire gutted the Comfort Inn Motel in Hay recently taking with it most of the 36 room complex.

The fire started in the laundry sparking from  the clothes dryer.

Eleven fire trucks from Hay, Deniliquin, and Griffith attended including RFS and NSW Fire Brigade tankers, bulk water tankers, pumps and one HAZMAT unit from Leeton.

The owners had been the only occupants in the motel at the time who attempted to fight the flames.

The building had a large roof void which allowed the flames to spread quickly.

The entire front section of the motel including the owners' residence was destroyed. Heat, smoke and water has caused damage to the remainder of the building.

The Motel was originally built by Mick and Patti Kehoe and opened in August 1987, then known as the Bishops Lodge Motel.

Located on the Sturt Highway, the Motel was situated next door to the tourist attraction and one of Hay's museums the "Bishop's Lodge"

The name has been changed a few times, also being known as The Sundowner, and finally the Comfort Inn owned by Chanook, Melissa and Hannah Song.

It was a four star Motel, which had recently undergone massive renovations.

The motel has been demolished and is a sad loss for Hay tourism.
