Port Macquarie’s state member for parliament for the past 12 years, Robert Oakeshott, formally resigned yesterday.

Oakeshott is contesting the Federal seat of Lyne which has been left vacant by the retirement of Nationals representative Mark Vaile.

Watch out on OurPatch for regular updates from all candidates in the upcoming Federal election.

The State seat will now remain vacant until a by-election is held to elect a new member. The electorate office will remain open and staff will continue in a caretaker mode.

A spokesperson said staff would continue to assist constituents in making representations to NSW Government agencies and ministers but would not advoacte highly contentious or political issues.

  • A line on Lyne, from the DLP

Why is the DLP running a candidate in Lyne? Well… analysis of the Lyne by-election seems to be of the National/”independent” personalities, their personal track record on specific local issues and their careers (saving or advancing them). What is missed in all of this is that country people and farmers currently have no major party representing their interest. My grandfather was a dairyman. He lost his fingers chopping wood and had to upgrade to milking machines. But you don’t have to be a farmer to observe that rural people have been abandoned and despised. The Nationals (even the deputy PM and trade minister) have let Lyne down at the federal level, the ALP doesn’t care enough to run, and the Greens do not have the interests of farmers in mind. Surely it would be better for Lyne if rather than paying farmers to leave their farms, they encouraged the transfer of needed resources, people and industry out of the noisy big smoke into rural areas (which would be better for the environment as well!). The DLP, having re-formed as a state party as well, intends to contest both the next state and federal elections in both houses, and will give fair representation of the interests of workers and families in rural areas as well as urban areas. • The Green Perspective

This is interesting. I had heard that Monstar’s company was involved professionally with the Oakeshott campaign. I’d be careful that what you write doesn’t end up on media watch if someone might misconstrue your editorial for advertorial. That has happened in Lyne before with the Holiday Coast Pictorial and the Mark Vaile as Superman on the cover issue.

Voters of Lyne, don’t confuse the DLP with the ALP. They are very different partys.

dlpvp, the Greens actually have the longterm interests of farmers in mind. Many local farmers are indeed Greens themselves. If you look at this electorate in the AEC (Australian Electoral Commission) website statistics of past elections, the Green usually do much better, up to 12 or 15%, in the rural areas when only achieving 2-5% in the towns like Port Macquarie and Wauchope. This is the irony of the towns person voting conservatively for the Nationals when the rural areas are actually, progressively going Green. Greens voting farmers espouse local, sustainable and organic farming. Avoiding degradation of the land and rivers by mass profit farming techniques and bulk transport and export which is part of the reason we find ourselves in the current situation of rising food costs. Making the switch is practical and effective. You may not have the same volume of produce, but it ends up of a higher quality and value at market as organic produce is in demand especially with the nations top chefs.

The Greens are about improving our farming practices but not at the cost of the environment or the farmer. Making it through the tough times of flood and drought, preventing the further deterioration of the local climate extremes through combating climate change.

I believe you are best not to get Rob’d, try voting for Susie instead!

In response to the above comment: all parties have been invited to submit editorial and participate in blogs on this site but no one else has taken up the offer. This article was only designed to get the ball rolling and invite all candidates to participate in online discussion on Our Patch. Rob Drew went so far as to log in but has not gone any further .. please encourage the Greens so submit copy in the form of blogs etc.
