Student Surprise

Very sadly, money does not grow on trees. There are none so  acutely aware of this fact as those   forsaking earning, for learning. One of the common questions asked amongst the poor intelligencia in training is, ‘Do you have a good recipe for a student on a tight budget?’

An overview: 

They are hard critters to catch and too large for most pans and ovens. If there is a large group to feed, roasting on a spit is the best option. However, an open fire is preferred as they take quite a time to cook through and a gas fired spit roast can be expensive to operate.

The easiest students to catch are those studying IT and Accounting. They are often tired and lethargic from late nights working. However, these are not the best meat as they seldom exercise. The fat tends to make the fire flare and the meat is often burnt on the outside as a result.

The hardest, but by far the tastiest students to catch, are those studying Physiotherapy or other health sciences. They marinate well and the meat holds the flavours beautifully. However, be prepared for 3-4 hour cook time as there is still a fair amount of bulk in the average student. As an added bonus, try to get their bag on capture too, you may find a surprise. Being the health concious studyophiles they are, there is often a muesli or snack bar or even a salad inside. This can make an excellent first course.

Students are a tough group, so any recipe that asks for a long slow cooking method suits well. Remember too, if you select one from the class you are attending, finding a good recipe for them will not only increase your chance of passing by reducing the competition, but will impress your classmates too. And don’t forget, you can branch out into International cuisine. With the influx of students from overseas taking up places in our institutions of higher learning, it is easy to find one for a branch out into ethnic food.

  • Cruel... but hilarious!

    Do you have a good recipe for an creative industries/arts student? Remember, most arts students are pretty skinny as they opt for alternative diets like vegan, vego or gluten-free diets. Perhaps arts students could be added to a meal, as a kind of seasoning or a side dish, to enhance a recipe for, say, a phys-ed student. Youd need to bring those creative juices out – those are the ‘flavours’ that distinguish arts students from the rest. When I was a uni student, I spent a short period living on a rice and soy sauce diet—the sacrifices one makes for a Big Day Out ticket.

  • Arts student creative type recipes

    I find arts students and creative types are best in a curry.They are hard to clean so the curry masks what can sometimes be a pungent odour coming from the meat. But don’t be put off as the meat is otherwise of good texture. They go well with a good glass of Shiraz.
