Local Coffs Harbour Treats

Christmas 2008, the big spend, or what you have this year. Maybe it will be a little less than previous years. Big Kev tells us we need to spend to save the economy and it makes sense to save the local economy to spend locally. Some local ideas for the Christmas feast or for presents are:

  • Dorrigo potatoes; You can’t go past them and you know exactly where they come from; the fertile volcanic Dorrigo plateau watered with fresh mountain rain. Yummy.
  • Orara Valley Vine Ripened Tomatoes; Take the trip out to Nana Glen on Orara Way and get your tomatoes fresh from the farm gate. The sweetness bursts from these tomatoes so much it feels sinful to eat them.
  • Dangerous Dan’s Butchery in Macksville; If you were to tattoo all the awards these guys have got for their sausages and other products, you would need to have arms the size of Jumbo jet wings! With a motto of ‘Gate to plate”, in other words, the use of local ingredients, you cannot go wrong. Look at these two as an example; BUSHMAN'S BEEF STICKSIN THE TWIGGY STYLETasty beef and pork blend with Dorrigopeppers, garlic and chilli in thin style. Or why not try PORK WITCHETTY SAUSAGE 100% Nambucca Valley pork with lemonmyrtle. macadamia and wild apricots.
  • Urunga Honey Place; The place to find a huge array of honey products as well as quality local honey and honey from the Northern Tablelands. Well worth a visit to see the bees in action.
  • Valley of the Mist. Turn off in Macksville.A great day out to the Nambucca Valley to see the wildlife, take a canoe tour of the wetlands and buy some bush tucker foods, salad dressings, macadamia chutney, lillipilli jam or raw ingredients like lemon myrtle or aniseed myrtle to concoct a dish of your own at home. A great present for the chef who thinks they have everything.
  • Raleigh Vineyard and Winery, boasting to be Australia's most eastern winery. Taste the wines, try the local brandy crèmes in a variety of flavours, relax in the café and just have a great day out on the banks of the Bellinger River, fifteen minutes from Coffs Harbour. They will mail to you if you cannot get there.
  • Nambucca Oysters; Say no more! Beautiful, local and fresh, right on the back door step.
  • Longs Butchery, Coffs Harbour. Get Bradley to organise all your Christmas and summer barbeque meat needs. Butchered themselves from local stock, you cannot get fresher than that from the crew who know the history of what they are buying to prepare for you.

Don’t forget there are always the markets, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, all boasting a bountiful array of local produce and products. Give in to your desires but lessen the pain by supporting the local producers of the North Coast. There is plenty to choose from.
