Members of the Bendigo Historical Society took to the streets of Bendigo yesterday in order to protest their concern that as of May this year they will not have a home.
Wearing the colour red in reference to the Red Ribbon Rebellion of the 1800’s, when miners passively protested for justice, (for more information on the rebellion go to: http://www.bssc.edu.au/public/community/red_ribbon_rebellion/history.html )and lead by President Jim Evans, the members’ protest began in the library gardens in Hargreaves Street, where a large media presence consisting of two television camera crews, representatives from both local papers, the local ABC and the online community guide, www.ourpatch.com.au gave credence to the perceived concern in Bendigo.
The Bendigo Historical Society, which consists of volunteers who give their time researching, cataloguing and recording items from Bendigo’s rich history at the former Bendigo Gaol, want a permanent home for the society. Their current home will be lost in May when it is handed over to the Bendigo Senior Secondary College.
The group proceeded to march down Hargreaves Mall in order to publicise their concern.
There will be a second passive protest on Thursday at 12 noon on the lawn near the Bendigo Town Hall for those who want to find out more, or perhaps even join the protest.
