On the 11 November 2010 local artist Anton Hasell’s latest work ‘The Maps of Leichhardt’ will be open to the public.

Hasell uses a variety of media in his latest art work -sculpture, sound-sculpture, printmaking and large oil-on-copper paintings form the exhibition titled The Maps of Leichhardt.
The exhibition, inspired by the explorer Ludwig Leichhardt, explores new possibilities and ideas on how we might share better our experience of travelling together to the interior of this ancient continent.

Anton Hasell new work

Anton Hasell examines his work ‘Leichardt’s Map of Koroit.’

Hasell explains that he works very quickly. Interestingly he doesn’t sketch out a plan for his designs when working with copper, rather he responds to the material on hand and then paints the landscape onto the finished beaten piece of copper. ‘I wasn’t precious about anything, ‘explains Hasell, ‘…It’s a doing thing rather than a contemplative thing.’

Hasell has completed a number of significant public-space commissioned artworks including the Federation Bells Carillon and the Victoria Police Memorial in Melbourne, the HMS Beagle Ship Bell Chime in Darwin and the Eureka Circle interpretive sculpture in Ballarat.
He holds a PhD (Architecture & Design) by thesis on public-space design and a Masters degree in Fine Arts (Sculpture) from the Victorian College of the Arts.  He has lectured in a number of University art schools. Anton is a professional artist who is based in Mia Mia in Central Victoria. As director of Australian Bell Pty Ltd and co-inventor of the ‘harmonic bell’ (patented in the US), Anton is continuing to research the design, casting and tuning of new and traditional bells and to incorporate these bells into multi-sensory and interactive installations in contemporary public-spaces as a part of his wider practice as an artist.

The exhibition will be officially launched by Anton on Saturday 13 November at 2.00pm at the La Trobe University Visual Arts Centre.

He is a very entertaining artist so if you have time it will be well worth listening to him at the opening.
