  <body-html>&lt;p&gt;A first-ever study from Swinburne University in Melbourne found that chewing sugarfree gum effectively reduces anxiety by more than 17 percent during stressful situations.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The study also showed that chewing gum increases alertness and improves performance while multi-tasking.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Andrew Scholey, Ph.D., lead researcher and Professor of Behavioral and Brain Sciences at Swinburne University said that studies he conducted at the Human Cognitive Neuroscience Unit at Northumbria University demonstrated a relationship between increased alertness and a more relaxed state.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I have to say I chew sugarless gum on and off and have found it rather calming though have never attributed to reducing stress so significantly.  Maybe worth keeping a packet in the handbag for particularly stressful moments!&lt;/p&gt;</body-html>
