Uplift Fiji, collects and distributes second-hand bras to Fiji.

So why do they collect bras, and why second-hand bras rather than new ones?

Mainly because disadvantaged Fijians get much of their clothing from second-hand Australian clothes shops, and bras are rare in these shops, particularly in sizes to suit the indigenous Fijian build. A new bra costs $40 in Fiji, and wages range from $1.50- $4.50/hour, for those indigenous people who have jobs.

Because of the humid weather, rashes, fungal infections and abscesses occur between the breast and the chest wall, but wearing a bra can help.

Since 2005, Uplift Fiji, through Rotary Australia World Community Service, has sent bras through secure channels, making sure they get to the women who need them without compromising their dignity.

All second-hand bras are welcome (second-hand bras don’t attract import duty, but new ones do). Even worn out bras – they can be used for spare parts and strap extenders.
