Sustained by the dairy industry until 1974 when Akubra hats established their factory in town, Kempsey is now has a growing local economy based on tourism, service industries and farming including wine and nut production. Located 15kms inland on the mid north coast of NSW freshwater fishing, caneoing , horseriding and art and craft galleries can be found in Kempsey.

Thomas Kenneally grew up here and his book "A River Town", is based in Kempsey in the early 1900's
