Tenterfield, ‘birthplace of the nation’ became famous in 1889, when Henry Parkes, five time NSW premier delivered a speech in Tenterfield, leading to the establishment of the Australian federation in 1901.

Now, Tenterfield continues to embrace its rich historical past, but also provides visitors and locals alike with stunning surroundings (the best of which can be seen in Autumn) and a growing tourism industry. Located in northern New South Wales, Tenterfield, population 3500, is 275km south of Brisbane and 715k north-east of Sydney.

Some of Tenterfield’s attractions include;

Sir Henry Parkes Memorial School of Arts

Commemorates the site of Henry Parkes’ famous speech, and houses a collection of Parkes memorabilia.

The Saddle Shop

Inspired Tenterfield-born Peter Allen’s famous song; The Tenterfield Saddler. The Saddle Shop is still specialises in hand-made saddles and Australian clothing, and the building itself is over 150 years old and has been preserved in its original condition.

Boonoo State Forest and Woollool Woollool Aboriginal Place

Approximately 18 km from Tenterfield is Boonoo State Forest with Bark Hut picnic and camping area, Woolloool Woollool, a sacred site of the local Bundjalung people, and a 4WD track.

Boonoo Boonoo National Park

About 22 km from Tenterfield off the Mt Lindesay Rd is Boonoo Boonoo National Park. Boonoo Boonoo Falls mark where the Boonoo Boonoo River plateaus before falling 210 m into the gorge below. With a picnic area, walking track and viewing platform above the gorge, its no wonder Boonoo Boonoo was regularly visited by poet, Banjo Paterson over a century ago.

Sundown National Park

The Park traverses the Queensland-New South Wales border, offering visitors many bushwalking adventures. Sites to explore include Red Rock Falls, Mt Lofty, Red Rock Gorge, Carpenter's Gully, Koina's Tanks (whirlpool eroded holes in the river), McAllister’s Creek, Mt Donaldson and Donaldson Creek Falls, Ooline Creek, Blue Gorge, Mt Emily Creek and Gorge Creek.

Visitors can picnic, camp, canoe, swim or enjoy the wildlife, with over 130 different bird species to be found.
