Inverell is a mixed farming district, where the main crops are wheat, oats, barley, grain, sorghum and oilseed crops.

Annual events include; Celebration of the Outback two days of Bush Poetry, competitions and entertainment and the Countrywide Sapphire City Festival, in October, puts on a full week of activities, including open gardens, a street parade, art exhibition, markets and a firework finale. Fossicking for sapphires and other gems and seeing how precious stones are processed is a must do when in Inverell.
