Urban Theatre Projects creates distinctive new performances for Australian and international audiences that reflect stories and images of contemporary life. Engaging with diverse cultures and communities, the company explores new territory in contemporary arts practice and collaborative processes through a synthesis of artists, site, ideas and public dialogue.

Based in Bankstown, western Sydney, UTP is a social and political theatre company that draws upon a 27-year lineage of creating distinctive new theatre works through a process of dialogue between contemporary theatre practice and diverse communities. Stories and images of contemporary life are created in collaboration with teams of artists from hybrid art practices and diverse cultural backgrounds.

Over the last 10 years the company has made over 20 new works, including Artistic Director Alicia Talbot’s trilogyThe Cement Garage, The Longest Night(both part of Adelaide Festival 2002), andBack Home(Sydney Festival 2006).Back Homehas since toured to The Dreaming festival and Toronto’s international arts festival LuminaTO, in conjunction with a new project commissioned by Harbourfront Centre.The Last Highwaypremiered as part of Sydney Festival 2008.

In 2002, UTP was awarded the Sidney Myer Award in recognition of the company’s outstanding contribution to Australian theatre.
